Prof. Dr. Muhammad Rehman

Professor Dr. Muhammad Rehman is an internationally renowned figure in the field of cardiac surgery, with a legacy spanning over 50 years. He has personally performed over 20,000 open heart surgeries, making him one of the most experienced surgeons in the sub-continent.  Born in a remote village of East Peshawar, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa - Pakistan, on January 05, 1944 Dr. Rehman's commitment to advancing cardiac care led him to establish the state-of-the-art 500+ bed hospital, RMI, and Rehman Medical College in his hometown of Peshawar. In recognition of his outstanding services to the field of cardiac surgery, Dr. Rehman was conferred with the prestigious "Sitara-e-Imtiaz," one of the highest civilian awards by the government of Pakistan, in 2002. 

-    Joined The London Chest Hospital as Registrar in Cardiothoracic Surgery in 1974.
-    Joined the Royal Brompton Hospital, London, as Registrar in January 1975.
-    Returned to Pakistan and joined the National Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases (NICVD) as Consultant Cardiac Surgeon in August 1975.
-    Served as the Head of the Cardiac Surgical Department at NICVD for 28 years.
-    Retired as Professor of Cardiac Surgery in January 2004.
-    Dean Faculty of Cardiac Surgery in College of Physicians and Surgeons Pakistan.
-    President of Pakistan Society of Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgeons.
-    Founded "Friends of Cardiac Surgery," a non-profit organization supporting the cardiac unit at the Civil Hospital, Karachi.
-    Founder/Editor of the Journal of Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgeons.
-    Expertise in surgeries such as coronary bypass operation, complex congenital heart diseases, valvular heart diseases, and repair/total correction.
-    Trained a vast number of medical and paramedical staff.
-    Trained cardiac technicians, nurses, perfusionists, and doctors to perform open-heart surgeries at heart centers across Pakistan.
-    Established the Pakistan Society of Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgeons in 1991.
-    Organized three International Symposia of Cardiovascular Surgery and many more academic events in all major cities of Pakistan.
-    Helped set up four cardiac centers across Pakistan, including Civil Hospital Karachi, Civil Hospital Quetta, Nishtar Hospital Multan, and Ayub Medical Complex Abbottabad.

His commitment to excellence continues to inspire and guide the Department of Cardiovascular and Cardiothoracic Surgery at RMI, where his legacy lives on through the exceptional care provided to patients by our highly skilled faculty of surgeons.
