Prof. Dr. Muhammad Rehman

Professor Dr. Muhammad Rehman is an internationally renowned figure in the field of cardiac surgery, with a legacy spanning over 50 years. He has personally performed over 20,000 open heart surgeries, making him one of the most experienced surgeons in the sub-continent. 

Born in a remote village of East Peshawar, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa - Pakistan, on January 05, 1944 Dr. Rehman's unwavering commitment to advancing cardiac care led him to establish the state-of-the-art 500+ bed hospital, Rehman Medical Institute (RMI) and Rehman Medical College in his hometown of Peshawar. These institutions are a testament to his passion for providing top-class medical, diagnostic, and surgical services to people in need. 

In recognition of his outstanding services to the field of cardiac surgery, Dr. Rehman was conferred with the prestigious "Sitara-e-Imtiaz," one of the highest civilian awards by the government of Pakistan, in 2002. 

Dr. Rehman's remarkable journey began in 1974 when he joined The London Chest Hospital as Registrar in Cardiothoracic Surgery. He later joined the Royal Brompton Hospital, London, as Registrar in January 1975, before returning to Pakistan to join the National Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases (NICVD) as Consultant Cardiac Surgeon in August 1975. He served as the Head of the Cardiac Surgical Department at NICVD for 28 years, until his retirement as Professor of Cardiac Surgery in January 2004. 

During his time at NICVD, Dr. Rehman played a pivotal role in advancing cardiac care in Pakistan. He was the Dean Faculty of Cardiac Surgery in College of Physicians and Surgeons Pakistan and served as the President of Pakistan Society of Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgeons. Additionally, he founded "Friends of Cardiac Surgery," a non-profit organization supporting the cardiac unit at the Civil Hospital, Karachi. He is also the founder/editor of the Journal of Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgeons. 

Dr. Rehman's expertise in surgeries such as coronary bypass operation, complex congenital heart diseases, valvular heart diseases, and repair/total correction has established him as a pioneer in his field. He has also trained a vast number of medical and paramedical staff and has personally trained cardiac technicians, nurses, perfusionists, and doctors to perform open-heart surgeries at heart centers across Pakistan. 

In 1991, Dr. Rehman established the Pakistan Society of Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgeons, and since then, he has organized three International Symposia of Cardiovascular Surgery and many more academic events in all major cities of Pakistan. He has also helped set up four new cardiac centers across Pakistan, including Civil Hospital Karachi, Civil Hospital Quetta, Nishtar Hospital Multan, and Ayub Medical Complex Abbottabad.

Dr. Rehman's passion for advancing cardiac care is a true testament to his dedication and commitment to improving the lives of his patients. His unwavering commitment to excellence continues to inspire and guide the Department of Cardiovascular and Cardiothoracic Surgery at RMI, where his legacy lives on through the exceptional care provided to patients by our highly skilled faculty of surgeons.
